A TTRPG and Whisky Pairing: How can we build on the shared TTRPG Experience.

A TTRPG and Whisky Pairing: How can we build on the shared TTRPG Experience.

When Im not creating Tabletop content I work as a freelance designer focusing on the Whisky Industry. This has lead me to having the opportunity to work with some amazing brands while also attending many whisky tastings.

I started exploring what a Whisky tasting look like in the context of a tabletop session. A shared experience of not only the storytelling and gameplay but tasting and aromatic experience as well.

The First Whisky

Picture this. Your party must pass through a marshland….. then the GM begins to describe:

“As you take your first steps into the marsh your footsteps breakup and agitate the murky water, your senses are immediately overcome by“

The GM begins to hand out a small 10ml whisky sample to each player instructing them to first Nose (smell) the glass and then to have a small taste.

This whisky would be a Peated style, a whisky that has been augmented in its production by the burning of Peat (rotting plant matter that forms a wood like substance when dried) These whiskies provide flavours that are reminiscent of a campfire smoke, black pepper, Citrus and vanilla. This heavy smokey and funky style of whisky is used to bring a more visceral experience to that part of the session.

The players are encouraged to finish the sample throughout the next hour or so of gameplay.

After dispatching the Kobald Raiders who had made camp within the marshlands the local lord invites the party to a grand banquet in celebration of their victory.

The second whisky……..

Introduced during the banquet would be a Fortified style, something that when sampled would give flavours such as dried fruit, toasted caramel, sultanas, raisins and a dessert like sweetness.

This would once again bring the party together in a shared experience of both storytelling and flavour exploration.

[It is important to note that these suggested samples would be around 10ml roughly 1/3rd of a standard drink, this allows the experience of the drink to enhance play while not having the alcohol consumption become an issue]

Conclusion

All in all I think exploring new ways to immerse people in the story and the world is exciting and for me combining two things, I love Whisky and TTRPGs in an interesting experiment.
