So you're looking for a new Virtual Tabletop

The Virtual Tabletop is a powerful tool, allowing flexibility and with enough work in many cases a very high visual fidelity to the game.

I think TTRPGs play out differently depending on the style of game your running. Many virtual tabletops are designed in a way to lean into or enhance a certain style of play. This could be heavy narrative and theatre of the mind play, deep tactical battlemaps and visual reference. the final style i have outlined is a mix of the 2 that focuses more on minimalism and low barrier to entry.

Top VTT Picks for each style of play

Narrative & Theatre of the mind:

Alchemy RPG (Used for my current ShadowdarkRPG Campaign)

alchemyrpg.com/

One of if not the most polished and well presented VTTs. A beautiful and polished VTT that puts everything in one place.

  • Refined visual interface
  • Partnered with map and scenery designers and illustrators
  • Pre-made modules: with custom visuals sounds and more.

    Cons:

    • Extensive setup when not using one their modules
    • Select TTRPG rulesets supported (Custom game/rules setup coming soon.)
    • Subscription for more advanced features

      Tactical Battlemaps:

      Foundry Virtual Tabletop

      Pros:

      • Support for large number of TTRPG rulesets

          Pros:

          • Fast setup
          • Simple and intuitive Interface
          • Supports handheld devises

            Cons:

            • No Character sheet
            • No automated roles or stat blocks built in

              Bonus mention:

              Talespire

              https://store.steampowered.com/app/720620/TaleSpire/

Talespire is available through steam and brings the virtual tabletop as close as it gets to using models and custom terrain. In my experience I have enjoyed creating and crafting battle maps and tile sets purely for fun and my own enjoyment.

The VTT you ultimately choose to use will in part define what style of game you are running, each one has their strengths and weaknesses. Who knows you might be like me and bounce between them depending on the type of game your running.

The magic of VTTs for me will continue to be their ability to bring us together even though we may not be in the same room.

Get out there and play some games!
